US President Donald Trump on Monday posted an AI-altered video on social media mocking Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries as the US edges closer to a potential government shutdown .
The clip plays mariachi music in the background and depicts Schumer speaking at a podium in a digitally altered voice, saying, “There’s no way to sugar coat it: Nobody likes Democrats anymore… Not even Black people want to vote for us anymore, even Latinos hate us, so we need new voters, and if we give all these illegal aliens free health care, we might be able to get them on our side so they can vote for us”.
Jeffries is shown alongside Schumer wearing a sombrero and a handlebar moustache.
The video comes amid stalled White House negotiations over government funding, largely focused on health care policies. The funding deadline is Tuesday at midnight, and a deal must be reached by Wednesday to prevent a shutdown, which could disrupt federal operations and affect thousands of government workers.
Democrats condemned the video as misleading and racist. Jeffries posted on X, “Bigotry will get you nowhere. Cancel the Cuts. Lower the Cost. Save Healthcare. We are NOT backing down”.
Schumer also responded: “If you think your shutdown is a joke, it just proves what we all know: You can’t negotiate. You can only throw tantrums”.
The AI video likely reflects a Republican talking point claiming Democrats will shut down the government unless free health care is extended to undocumented immigrants.
In reality, federal law and Democratic proposals do not provide coverage for undocumented individuals, who are not eligible for federally funded health plans. Democrats are focused on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies for legally present individuals, as per CNN .
Vice President JD Vance said he believes a shutdown is likely because “Democrats won’t do the right thing”. Republican House speaker Mike Johnson was quoted by CNN as saying that Democrats want to “reinstate free health care for illegal aliens paid by American taxpayers. We are not doing that”.
Senator Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, warned that a shutdown could double health care premiums for millions of Americans, as per Newsweek .
Despite Monday’s White House meeting with Trump, Schumer, Jeffries, Senate majority leader John Thune, and speaker Johnson, both sides remain far apart.
Schumer said after the meeting, “There are still large differences between us”.
