Google has announced a suite of new security features designed to bolster Android devices against the growing threats of scams and theft ahead of Google I/O 2025 . “Android is constantly evolving to help keep you safe from the unexpected, from scams and lost belongings to the most sophisticated security threats. Here are three new ways Android is keeping you and your devices safe,” said the company in a blog post. The new features comprises of protections for calls, screen sharing, device access, message protection and access to permissions.
Improves scam protection Recognising the increasing sophistication of social engineering attacks , Google is introducing new tools to help users identify and avoid scams. One key feature is designed to analyse incoming calls and messages in real-time, alerting users if a conversation exhibits patterns commonly associated with fraudulent activities. This proactive approach aims to intercept scams before significant harm can be done. The system will look for red flags such as urgent requests for money or personal information, and impersonation of known entities.
Anti-theft measure to protect smartphone theft To combat the rising issue of smartphone theft, Google is implementing more robust anti-theft measures . One notable addition is a new locking mechanism that automatically engages when a device detects it has been forcibly removed from the user's possession and is moving rapidly, such as during a snatch-and-grab incident. This makes the stolen device immediately unusable to thieves. Furthermore, Google is enhancing its remote device management tools, allowing users to more easily locate, lock, and wipe their devices if they are lost or stolen.
Google stated that these new security features will be rolled out to Android devices in phases, starting later this year.
