Changing tides at 2025 IIHF World Championship in Europe

Send Push
The IIHF World Championship 2025 is in full swing across two key European hockey cities; Stockholm and Herning. Sixteen nations are split across two groups, each battling in round-robin matchups to secure spots in the final eight. With games now reaching the midpoint of group play, key patterns and surprising developments are already taking shape.

Canada and the United States entered early in group stage

Canada and the United States entered as medal hopefuls. But early scores reflect how unpredictable international play can be. The U.S. cruised through Denmark and Hungary, yet stumbled against Switzerland in a 3–0 loss. Canada, meanwhile, handled France and Latvia convincingly and prepared to face rivals Sweden and Finland next.

TV and live streaming options widely available

Viewers in North America have several options to follow the championship. NHL Network covers Team USA games in the U.S., with Fubo offering live streams including quarterfinals and medal games. ESPN+ streams other select matches. Canadian audiences can watch every game via TSN networks, or stream through TSN.ca and the TSN app.

Knockout stage nearing as pressure builds

As the group stage nears completion, the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The current format rewards consistency; three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime victory, and one for an overtime loss.

New challengers shaping the tournament’s story

So far, six different teams have claimed medals over the last two years. That parity continues in 2025. While Canada, Sweden, and Czechia are still strong, nations like Switzerland and Germany show the depth of international hockey talent.
