Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a grand appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, embracing traditional Indian elegance with a modern twist. Instead of the long train gowns she’s known for, the actress opted for an ivory-hued Banarasi saree by Manish Malhotra.

A dazzling return in a Banarasi saree

The saree was handwoven using the rare Kadwa technique from Varanasi, where each motif is individually crafted. Featuring rose gold and silver brocade work, the ensemble shimmered under the spotlight with real silver zari embroidery. She completed the look with a tissue dupatta adorned in real gold and silver zardozi, making a powerful statement about India’s rich textile legacy.

Jewels that stole the show

What truly elevated Aishwarya’s look was her heirloom jewellery, which sparked conversations online and among fashion critics. Designed by Manish Malhotra Jewellery, the pieces featured over 500 carats of Mozambique rubies. Her standout necklace alone carried more than 290 carats, reflecting luxury and heritage. A second sculptural necklace with over 30 carats of rubies and uncut diamonds set in 18k gold added depth to the styling. Completing the look was her “Renaissance Of Rubies” statement ring, an intricate floral design that fused bold rubies with uncut diamonds, creating a royal yet refined aesthetic.

An ode to Indian heritage on the global stage

Aishwarya’s entire appearance was a tribute to Indian culture. From her sindoor-clad forehead to the Banarasi weave and gemstone-laden jewellery, her styling spoke volumes about identity, pride, and craftsmanship. Amid global red carpet looks dominated by Western couture, her choice to wear a saree and heirloom-inspired jewels was refreshing and impactful. Aishwarya once again reminded the world why she’s not just a fashion icon, but also a cultural ambassador. Her Cannes 2025 look was not merely about glamour; it was about honouring Indian traditions with elegance and confidence.
