Premier League goalkeepers are reportedly fearing regular howlers this season due to the new footballs being used. After Nike's 25-year deal expired last season, Puma is the league's new supplier, and it appears their version could soon have Alisson, David Raya, Jordan Pickford and co fumbling about between the sticks.
The 2025-26 ball is named the Orbita Ultimate PL. The same ball was used in the EFL Cup last season, and Mikel Arteta infamously complained about it 'flying a lot' and affecting his team's chances of scoring. Arguing the Nike Premier League types were different, the EFL responded by stating: "All clubs play with the same ball."
According to The Sun, top-flight stoppers are now expressing fears that they will struggle to handle the new edition. One No.1 was quoted as saying, "It is more like a volleyball, and it moves in the air so much. The Nike one was not like that.
"I don't ever remember a ball like this, and I have got one at home to keep getting used to the feel of it. It is extremely slippery, which makes it difficult to handle. There will be a lot of mistakes this season."
Another keeper was said to declare: "You will not be seeing many catches this season, I guarantee that." However, strikers may also have difficulties controlling their efforts.
The new ball was first used for the Premier League Summer Series in the United States in July. Nike had previously taken over from Mitre as Premier League ball supplier, following the end of the 1999/2000 season.
Despite keepers being on red alert, Premier League keepers seemed to escape standout mistakes. Altay Bayindir misjudged the corner that enabled Riccardo Calafiori to score Arsenal's winner at Old Trafford, although that was attributed to his own poor timing.
Indeed, just 20 goals were scored on the opening weekend, with two matches finishing goalless. However, that could change for matchweek two as keepers seemingly continue to struggle to get to grips with the new balls.
