Certain pensioners can claim this week for a payment of up to £300. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed people over State Pension age who need to claim this year's Winter Fuel Payment can do so by phone after lines opened on Monday (October 13).
As reported by the Daily Record, pensioners can also make a postal claim. Full details on how to do this can be found on GOV.UK.
Winter Fuel Payments will be automatically distributed to approximately nine million people in England and Wales throughout November and December.
A minimum of 880,000 Scottish pensioners will receive up to £305 through a similar but separate payment from next month - known as the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.
However, only pensioners born before 22 September 1959 will be eligible for these payments, either from the DWP or Social Security Scotland. Letters detailing the amount households can anticipate receiving will be sent out this month.

The DWP has stated that most people will automatically receive the Winter Fuel Payment if they were eligible during the qualifying week, which was between 15 and 21 September 2025. You do not need to make a claim if you receive any of the following:
- State Pension
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Attendance Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Carer's Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Income Support
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
- awards from the War Pensions Scheme
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
- Incapacity Benefit
- Industrial Death Benefit
If you're not receiving any of these, you'll need to make a claim if either of the following apply:
- You've never received the Winter Fuel Payment before

You can apply for the Winter Fuel Payment by:
- Post

The deadline to submit a claim for winter 2025 to 2026 is 31 March 2026. Full instructions on how to apply by post or phone are available on GOV.UK here.
