As autumn draws in there's nothing better to do than cosy up and watch a classic movie. When it comes to this time of year, nothing captures the season quite like this 1989 rom-com.
The Nora Ephron classic, When Harry Met Sally, directed by Rob Reiner, remains a firm re-watch for fans of the genre around this time of year, thanks to its autumnal New York settings. It follows the two titular characters as they address the all-consuming question: 'Can men and women ever just be friends?'.
Harry and Sally meet in Chicago before sharing a long drive together to New York City, where they live for the next 12 years. Years pass, and they have a chance encounter when they find themselves on the same flight. Then again, five years on, the pair have a chance encounter in the Big Apple at a bookshop.
They decide to make an attempt at a friendship, without sexual attraction getting between them, and as a result, they spend quality time together discussing their tragic love lives. It all comes down to one New Year's Eve party when a midnight kiss could be about to change the entire course of their friendship.
A rave review on Rotten Tomatoes says: "When Harry Met Sally is my favourite movie because it just gets it. It's not trying too hard to be a grand love story. It just is. The dialogue is sharp. The chemistry is effortless.
"Every scene feels like a conversation I've either had or want to have. It's funny without forcing it. romantic without being cheesy."
Meanwhile, another review claims:"One of the foundational rom-coms. As someone who dislikes romcoms the majority of the time, this being in my top 10 movies ever is wild to me... but it is.
"Meg and Billy are flawless in this. I'll rewatch this over and over again. Heart and charisma grounded in reality with a dash of hopeless romantic."
"Chemistry" is one word that continues to come up amidst fan reviews, as they absorb the on-screen friendship-turned-relationship between the two leading actors, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. It was this unfaulted romance between the two that helped the film to gross $92.8 million across North America and be met with such high acclaim that continues decades later.
A review reads: "I cried. Amazing chemistry between the lead actors and enjoyable writing. I do like how gradual the romance is; as both characters develop, they find that they are surprisingly compatible."
Another person shares: "When Harry Met Sally (1989), Nora Ephron's smart, witty script is a true delight, enlivened further by pitch-perfect performances from leads Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. A definitive 80s movie but timeless in its themes, delivery and style."
The backdrop of the movie takes place around autumn, and a picturesque stroll through Central Park, surrounded by orange leaves, remains firmly in fans' minds when they think about this movie. With all of the outfit inspiration and dreamy 80s settings, there's no better movie night pick for this time of year.
Whether you're watching it for the first time or going back to an oldy but a goody, When Harry Met Sally is available to stream now on Amazon Prime.
