Bangladesh’s journey in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup came to a shocking end after a dramatic collapse against Sri Lanka. In a match that seemed firmly in Bangladesh’s control, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atapattu produced a stunning last-over spell to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Her brilliant performance not only sealed the win for Sri Lanka but also marked the best bowling figures of her 15-year ODI career.
Bangladesh Needed Just 9 Runs with 5 Wickets in Hand
The match, held at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai, saw Sri Lanka posting a total of 202 runs after batting first. Chasing a target of 203, Bangladesh appeared to be cruising at 194 for 5 at the end of 49 overs — needing just 9 runs from the final over with five wickets remaining.
Atapattu’s Bold Move Changed Everything
With the match slipping away, Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Atapattu decided to take matters into her own hands and bowled the final over. What followed was pure drama.
Four Wickets Fell for Just One Run
On the very first ball, Atapattu dismissed Rabeya Khan. The next delivery saw Nahida Akhtar run out. On the third ball, she claimed the crucial wicket of Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana, who was batting on 77. The fourth ball brought another wicket — Maroofa Akhtar. In a span of four deliveries, Bangladesh lost four wickets for zero runs, turning a certain win into chaos.
With just one wicket remaining, Bangladesh managed a single run off the fifth ball, but failed to score off the last. They ended at 195 for 9, losing the match by seven runs — and with it, their place in the tournament.
Career-Best Show by Chamari Atapattu
Atapattu finished with incredible bowling figures of 4 for 42 in 10 overs, her best-ever in ODIs. She also achieved two personal milestones in the same match — crossing 4,000 career runs and taking her 50th ODI wicket.
