Foreign Office updates 'safety' travel advice for popular European destination

TheForeign Officehas updated its 'safety and security' guidance for one popular European destination. This newly issued advice specifically concerns information on hiking in remote, mountainous areas, which can prove especially 'demanding' for travellers.

"If you are planning a skiingor mountaineering holiday, see Policija - Helpful Advice to all Hikers, Trekkers and Mountaineers and National Meteorological Service of Slovenia before you travel," current advice from the Foreign Office reads.

"Off-piste skiing is highly dangerous as there is a risk of avalanches in some areas." Alongside this, the Government department has outlined seven key pointers for anyone contemplating a hike in Slovenia.

Crucially, this involves making friends and families aware of your plans while making several preparations to limit associated risks. These include the following:

Take particular care if you're in an area where bears have been sighted. Visitors in mountain areas occasionally encounter bears and wolves

Consider the level of difficulty and distance

Plan for the weakest member of your group

Use a printed or digital map with marked paths and their descriptions

Tell family or friends of your plans

Check whether mountain cabins are open

Do not use hiking trails that have been closed or take shortcuts

Bears inhabit wooded areas across Slovenia and even reside in some areas close to cities. The Government department's advice regarding their danger comes shortly after a bear attacked a person while walking their dog earlier this year.

This incident occurred in Skofljica, approximately six miles southeast of Ljubljana. Beyond this, the Foreign Office added: "Some demanding mountain trails can include sections of via ferrata (steel wires and metal rungs), which need a climbing harness and helmet. For mountain rescue, call 112."

On its official advice page, the Foreign Office also offers many other travel tips for those considering a trip to Slovenia. These cover everything from extreme weather risks, transport regulations, and passport rules, among other things.

While no travel can be 'guaranteed safe', the Foreign Office urges Brits to consider its advice thoroughly beforehand. "The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides advice about risks of travel to help you make informed decisions," its website adds.

"If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency."
