Ace bowling all-rounder Washington Sundarspoke on how he always waits for chances to come by his way rather than going after perfection. Sundar's unbeaten 23-ball 49-run knock helped India level the five-match series against Australia as they won the third T20I in Hobart by five wickets and nine balls to spare.
Sundar commented on how he approaches his role as a bowling all-rounder. Sundar also underscored that his team-first approach is the source from where he derives satisfaction.
“I just try to wait for my opportunities. One thing I never want to do is chase results. Whenever an opportunity comes, I focus on what the situation and conditions demand, and play to my strengths. That way, I’m clearer in my mind and can truly enjoy the game. If I start thinking that I have to perform with the bat because I haven’t done much with the ball, it takes away the joy. As long as I follow my process and do what’s right for the team, that’s where the real satisfaction lies,” stated Sundar, as quoted by India Today.
The 26-year-old elaborated on his mindset while entering the field with the bat during a steep run-chase. He also remarked how proud he always feel while donning the India jersey and how he enjoys playing international cricket.
“Today, I was mentally prepared for my chance to bat. I just wanted to watch the ball closely and react positively. I didn’t overthink anything — I just focused on seeing the ball and enjoying the moment. God was very kind today. It’s always a great honour to represent the country. Whatever opportunity comes my way, I want to be ready for it — that’s the mindset I carry every single day. Playing at this level is a lot of fun, and I just want to keep enjoying it,” he added.
India were able to chase down 187 in just 18.3 overs. Arshdeep Singh's three-wicket haul (3/35 in 4 overs) earned him the Player of the Match accolade. However, several former cricketers and analysts praised Sundar's fearless power-hitting too.
Before travelling back home, the Men in Blue will take on the Aussies in the fourth and fifth T20Is in Carrara and Brisbane on November 6 and November 8, respectively. Suryakumar Yadav & Co. will be aiming on leveraging the momentum in their favour.
